What Petra Map Reveals
Exploring the Petra map in solo mode allowed me to observe in more detail some information the story developers planted around some areas.
For example, there is a laptop with two email messages, and also a tablet that say:
Survey of the uppermost levels of the temple is almost complete, planning for excavation of the lower chambers. Our greatest finds so far are the statues of Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite, and we are hopeful they will be the first of many.
IDannidis - 10:22AM
Early Imaging pass has revealed a hidden chamber. Al-Hamdan believes that it might be a significant find, and we have found a narrow opening through which we can perform further excavation.
Faisal - 10:37AM

... started excavation of the hidden treasure chamber from our recent imaging survey. If there was another method of access in the past, we have not yet discovered it.
Thank you for your continued funding of our Petra explorations, ongoing work in Illios, and the new project in Thailand. Dr. Nachareon is eager to begin! With so many sites under threat, your contributions make it possible for us to continue this important work.
- H. Faisal

There is another laptop with a login screen. His username is Hamid. Thus, now we know his full name is Hamid Faisal.
All this sounds cool, but there is no hint of a new map in the horizon. There is already a Thailand map named AYUTTHAYA (Capture the Flag mode). However, there doesn’t seem to be any excavations there, is it?
So one has to wonder if there will be a new Thailand map location to show this excavation.
Correction: @JoshKneale94 informs me that Petra — in real-life — is located in Jordan.
Most of the maps we have seen so far in Overwatch, eventually we have had a Hero representing that map location (or vice versa). Some examples:
Rio de Janeiro Summer Games (Brazil): Lucio
Temple of Anubis (Cairo, Egypt): Ana
Volskaya (Russia): Zarya
Horizon Lunar Colony: Winston
Hanamura (Japan): Genji & Hanzo
Eichenwalde (Germany): Reinhardt
King’s Row (London, England): Tracer
Numbani (Africa): Doomfist & Orisa
Nepal (Asia): Zenyatta
Oasis (Irak): Moira
Dorado (Mexico): Sombra
Junkertown (Australia): Junkrat
Route 66 (Santa Fe, New Mexico USA): McCree
Chateau Guillard (France): Widowmaker
Ecopoint: Antarctica: Mei (but she’s from Xi’an, China)
Maps that don’t have a Hero:
Lijiang Tower (China)
Rialto (Venice, Italy)
Watchpoint: Gibraltar (Winston was there in the cinematic, but while it is located near Spain, it is a British territory, and a complicated governance history)
Ilios & Petra (Greece)
Hollywood (California, USA)
Heroes without a Map:
Torbjorn & Brigitte (Gothenburg, Sweden)
Soldier: 76 (USA)
Reaper (Unknown, USA)
Bastion (Unknown)
D.va (Busan, South Korea)
Symmetra (Utopaea, India)
Mercy (Zurich, Switzerland)
Pharah (Giza, Egypt)
