BlizzCon 2015 Overwatch What’s Next Panel Transcript

Kaplan: How are you guys doing? I love you too. With me I have two very special guests. I have Arnold Tsang, our assistant art director in Overwatch. This is the guy who draw every single one of those heroes you saw in that line-up.

And we have Geoff Goodman who is the lead hero designer. He was also (little tribute for you) — has anyone here played World of Warcraft? This is the guy who made Onyxia, C’Thun, Nefarian, the Lich King.

If you ever wondered if Onyxia’s deep-breath has changed, ask Geoff. He was the guy.

Goodman: I put in a little randomness. It changes every time.

Kaplan: We have a lot of stuff to cover with you, guys. We are going to give you a quick update on how the beta is going. We are going to talk about the big console announcement. We are going to talk about the new map: Hollywood, that we talked about today; and probably what everyone is most excited about is the new heroes.

So… the beta. Let’s talk about that. We put these stats as of Tuesday which was the week of the beta running — We started on October 27th — we didn’t want to make the powerpoint too close to the date of the panel here. As of Tuesday, we have had 82,000 total matches. As of yesterday, over a 130,000. Something like that. If people in the beta are playing a ton, we are learning a ton from it.

We are looking at our matchmaker, we are gauging our servers, and we are also seeing a lot of balance changes that we want to do in the future; and Geoff is going to talk about a lot of that stuff. Maybe during the Q&A.

The average match length is perfectly balanced. Everybody please tweet that now. Average match length. Who has a guess? 7:34 minutes.

Who do you think is the most played hero in Overwatch? A lot of people saying Reaper. Unfortunately for you, it is Pharah.

Who do you think that you should have on your team, if you want the best chance of winning? This one is a sleeper: Symmetra. She is insanely powerful, and it is not because of the teleporter. It is because of the shields. The shields are very very good.

So we are learning a lot from the beta. We are gathering tons of data, and statistics. We are trying to share more of that stuff with you guys as it progresses.
