Blizzard Teases New Istanbul Hero

Blizzard Entertainment has teased a brand-new Overwatch hero with today’s transmedia tweet. In this report, Operation White Dome takes place in Istanbul, Turkey. Formerly known in history as Constantinople — for those who remember reading about the journey of Marco Polo.

According to Blizzard’s report: Ana Amari led a team composed of Reinhardt, Torbjorn, and Private First Class Emre Sarioglu into Istanbul to deal with remnants of the Omnic resistance. Emre is potentially to be Hero 27 (or the 27th hero in Overwatch).

In this confrontation, Reinhardt saved Torbjorn’s life, though Torbjorn suffered serious injuries.

This seriously hints there might be a upcoming digital comic telling the story of how Torbjorn’s eye and hand were lost and replaced with prosthesis. It would be cool if we also got to see a new QP/Competitive map set there, or at least something akin to the Uprising special event, and a cinematic.

I will attend PAX East with a press badge. Make sure to follow us on Twitter @blizzplanetcom for updates. I have a feeling we might hear more about this hero there.

I checked online some of the top landmarks of Istanbul to get a sense of what Blizzard might have in store for us in a map, and to my surprise there are just so many landmarks and places of interest it is difficult to figure out what the developers might go with for inspiration.

If the map was similar to El Dorado — where you can see a lot of houses and buidings throughout the mountain, we might see some landmarks like museums, towers, mosques and such in the background. But Blizzard also likes to add their vision of how locations might look like in a futuristic setting.

We don’t know where exactly in Istanbul this White Dome mission took place, but we do know it is in the Outskirts, not in the city proper. So it might be safe to think that some of the tallest landmarks might be seen in the distance. Some images can be found at Kathmandu and Beyond, and at Touropia

Blizzard Entertainment posted a follow up to the “White Dome” mission aftermath. Torbjorn sent a letter to his wife from the hospital letting her know about his injuries. Indeed, as I speculated, he reveals the loss of his arm in that mission.

Another huge revelation is that Torbjorn’s wife was pregnant at the moment WHITE DOME took place, Reinhardt was to become the godfather, and Reinhardt was to name the baby girl.

If you remember past hero reveals, Blizzard Entertainment takes the opportunity to introduce two heroes in the same hero reveal. Let me refresh your memory. It was during the Orisa teaser that we learned about Doomfist and about Efi Oladele. Back then we didn’t even know the hero’s name would be Orisa, but simultaneously Blizzard was signaling that Doomfist had attacked the Numbani airport. Two heroes.

In the latest White Dome follow up, we now know that Torbjorn has a daughter and interestingly Torbjorn makes a reference he hopes his daughter “doesn’t take after REINHARDT too much.”

The questions are: Will Torbjorn’s daughter be Hero 28? Will she be a tank (as that last quote possibly suggests)?

To figure out if this is true, we have to look up at a timeline. When did the White Dome operation take place? (that’s the year the girl was born)

The answer is: Before the Uprising. Before Tracer joined Overwatch. Before Overwatch got disbanded by the UN. Torbjorn lost his left arm during the White Dorm operation. Then he built a prosthesis — which later he is visibly using during the UPRISING digital comics (page 11-12).

We know that UPRISING took place 7 years in the past from the Event’s page.

We also know that the Omnic Crisis started 30 years ago, and lasted 10 years. Operation White Dome describes remnants of the Omnics Resistance — which places the timeline near the end of those 10-year war. That means a timeframe for WHITE DOME and the birth of Torbjorn’s daughter can be extrapolated to be approximately 20 years in the past (more or less). Enough for her to be the Overwatch Hero 28.

Relive Tracer’s First Mission

Journey seven years into the past and join a group of Overwatch agents fighting through the streets of King’s Row to quell an uprising led by Null Sector, a rogue group of omnics. Team up with your friends and play as Tracer, Torbjörn, Reinhardt, or Mercy to defeat the robots and liberate the city. There are no reinforcements. Failure is not an option. The future depends on you.

Another peculiar thing to note is that Blizzard might or might not have added some sort of coded message. It is peculiar to note that the White Dome operation is classified as ZX24AL. The Torbjorn letter also has some odd numbering at the bottom-right: OW-ICLD-07.

Last time we saw something “odd” like this? The Sombra ARG.

According to PickCollins0330 in Reddit, Torbjorn’s daughter is named Brigitte, and she already made a cameo in Reinhardt’s animated short “Honor and Glory.”

My dear Ingrid,

I know that by now you have gotten news of my injuries in our latest mission. While the descriptions may sound terrible, the doctors are quite sure I’ll make a full recovery. Even Angela came to visit me! On the matter of my arm, I promise to make it my first priority to construct a suitable prosthesis that will make everyone forget that it was ever gone. If only Angela’s dreams of tissue regeneration were a reality! I told her she should be working harder!

They tell me that you have not yet gone into labor, so I am holding out hope that I will be able to be by your side back home in Gothenburg when the time comes. Just wait a little longer for me!

You may have heard that Reinhardt is responsible for saving my life. I’ve heard the story at least four different times myself, already, each time more unbelievable than the last. Exaggerations, as you know how he can be. All the same, they’ve decided to award him a commendation for “conspicuous bravery.” Could two words better describe the big oaf?

He has been bothering me insufferably at my bedside. Half in jest, I suggested that if it would shut him up, I would allow him to name our daughter, as he has been badgering me about it these past months. He, of course, took me at my word. Truth be told, I had been considering making him her godfather, and I hope you’ll forgive me for making this decision without your consultation. We can only hope she doesn’t take after him too much.

I told him that you would have to agree to any name he chose, so let’s hope it’s a good one (though I fear that may be beyond his abilities, given some of the ridiculous names he gives the characters in his “true stories”). I’m getting sick of this hospital, so I am hoping to return soon.
