Temple of Anubis

The Temple of Anubis is an Assault map located in Egypt. Attackers fight to capture two objectives; defenders hold them off until time runs out.

“Nestled among the ancient ruins of the Giza Plateau on the outskirts of Cairo, the Temple of Anubis is one of many new excavations in the area. While most believe that the site is of interest for archaeological reasons, it also hides the entrance to a research facility that extends deep beneath the earth. The facility is alleged to house an artificial intelligence, but the whole truth is known only to a select few. Not even the agents of Helix Security International who guard the facility know what they’re protecting.” — Overwatch Visual Source Book (Overwatch: Collector’s Edition)

Voicelines / Quotes

These are hero voiceline / quotes specifically tailored for the Temple of Anubis.

Pharah: We are at my home turf now.

Ana: It feels good to be home.

Junkrat: You think there is something worth stealing in that temple?

Zenyatta: A chance to focus!

Trivia & Easter Eggs

Temple of Anubis has a few easter eggs from StarCraft II, Hearthstone and World of Warcraft. There is a trivia showing a folder with photos. Originally, before Blizzard Entertainment unveiled Ana at the SDCC 2015 (July), fans speculated the photo was of Sombra. It turned out to be Ana’s Shriek skin.

Every few seconds, when you are in the Sand Crawler area, you will hear 3 flying boats racing. Their audio effect sounds very similar to the Star Wars: The Phantom Menace Pod Race scene.

Among the hieroglyphs found at the Temple of Anubis on the Defense (Point B) area one can recognize the World of Warcraft Horde crest.

Posters, Signs and Hieroglyphs

There are no posters in Temple of Anubis. However, there are newspapers in english at the Sand Crawler (Attack Team), on the ground everywhere between Point A and Point B. The same generic newspaper found in King’s Row and other maps (showing Tracer, McCree, and the Global Hacking Spree headline).

Among the hieroglyphs: The entrance to the Defense spawn point shows a winged circle. This is the Winged Solar Disk which represents Horus of Behdet (with goddesses Nekhbet and Uazet in the form of uraeus snakes on his sides) in his battle form against Seth. A symbol of royalty, divinity and power.

Outside the Temple of Anubis, by Objective A, there is a village with Arabic signs. Special thanks to our arabic freelancer josephgor for translating them for Blizzplanet (check out our gallery below).

On the Defense team’s side there are ancient hieroglyphs (logographic script). It is nigh impossible to decipher what the hieroglyphs in the Temple of Anubis mean unless you know how to read — if Blizzard meant to hide something that is. Some of the symbols are common with an alphabet analog:

Defense Team

This is the spawn point for the Defense Team. Beyond the sealed door in the back of the room is the inaccessible entrance to the depths of the Temple of Anubis where the Helix Security International lab holds a mysterious secret allegedly related to the Anubis AI. Junkrat is rumored to possess intel about that, but at the moment it’s unrevealed.

Attack Team

The Attack Team spawns inside the Sand Crawler (called so in the Overwatch Visual Source Book) — a massive wheeled-vehicle used to traverse the deserts of Egypt. It doesn’t seem to be particularly an Overwatch vehicle, but what Egyptians use as a transport. On the side of the Sand Crawler you can see far in the distance a second Sand Crawler.

Ahead toward the Point A objective you can see various statues, including two massive Anubis statues.
